SIBL, EPW TO HOST ‘WRESTLING EXTRAVAGANZA’
SWANSEA – In conjunction with Eastern Professional Wrestling, the Swansea Independent Baseball League will stage its third annual “Wrestling Extravaganza” on Friday, May 16, starting at 6 p.m. in the gymnasium of Case High School located on School Street in Swansea.
According to SIBL President Ken Garcia, the May 16 program will be child-friendly and family-friendly and will feature seven bouts, including ones involving Scotty 2 Hotty and heart-throb Antonio Thomas of World Wrestling E fame.
Scott 2 Hotty will be part of the main event, a 10-man battle in a double-steel cage. Scott 2 Hotty, Afterburn, Rocco Abruzzi and Thom Kane will battle SIBL alumnus “Brutal” Bob Evans, the Winter Hill Gang, Bennett and Angers.
In another steel-cage clash, “The Wildman Kongo,” a 350-pound beast, will confront Dan Freitas, the pride of Fall River.
Among the other bouts on tap, a tag team title will be on the line when champions The Coolers face off against challengers Chunky But Funky. In the highlighted one-on-one challenge match, Antonio Thomas will take on Nick Westgate.
Bouts will start at 7 p.m. on May 16, but doors will be open at 6 p.m. for a meet-and-greet with wrestlers. Tickets are priced at $20, $18 and $12 and can be purchased at the door.

SIBL TEAMS THRIVING IN AAU PLAY
SWANSEA – Teams representing the Swansea Independent Baseball League continue to perform well against other clubs in the New England District of AAU Baseball.
The SIBL’s 13-and-Under Division squad recently won three of four outings, while its 11-and-Under Division entry split a doubleheader against perennial powerhouse South Shore Baseball Club of Hingham.
13-AND-UNDER
The SIBL’s 13-and-Under Division entry split a doubleheader against the South Coast Shamrocks of Lakeville, losing the opener by a 10-6 tally before coming from behind the take the nightcap, 12-7, at the Ted Williams Baseball Cam in Lakeville.
In the first game, C.J. Maderios and Zach Mitsmen both lined two hits and Maderios also drove in four runs, while pitchers Rick Vichroski and Maderios combined for seven strikeouts for Swansea. The Shamrocks rebounded from a four-run deficit with a seven-run explosion in the bottom of the fourth inning.
In the second contest, the SIBL squad eradicated a 3-0 deficit by pushing across six runs in the bottom of the third frame and cruised to the victory. Maderios knocked in three runs, while pitchers Jordan Thivierge and Dan Pedro teamed up to whiff four batters.
Swansea later swept Frozen Ropes of Franklin by margins of 9-6 and 17-6.
In the opener, Dan Pedro pitched 3.2 innings in relief of starter Jordan Thivierge and notched eight strikeouts as the SIBL club zoomed to an early 8-1 advantage, then held off a late comeback effort. Zach Mitsmenn paced the winners offensively with two runs batted in.
In the nightcap, Swansea exploded for 14 runs in the third inning to erase a 4-3 deficit and coasted to its third straight victory. C.J. Maderios sparked the SIBL entry with three runs batted in, while teammates Mitsmenn and Coty Root both drove in a pair of runs. Maderios came out of the bullpen to register four strikeouts in 1.1 innings of work on the hill.
11-AND-UNDER
Joe Fingliss pitched a no-hitter and struck out seven batters to highlight Swansea’s 1-0 triumph over SSBC in the first game of a doubleheader. Nick Soares double in the first inning and rode home on Matt Michael’s single to account for the game’s only score and Michael added a double in the fourth frame.
SSBC averted a sweep in the nightcap when it tallied two runs in the final chapter to earn an 8-7 win. Andrew Howard sparked Swansea’s attack with two hits and Fingliss contributed a run-producing double, while Soares and Myke DeCosta split the pitching duties.

SIBL TEAMS BATTLE IN EARLY-SEASON PLAY

BRONCO DIVISION/AMERICAN LEAGUE
Yankees 10, Athletics 8
The Yankees used a six-run explosion in the fifth inning to fuel a come-from-behind victory over the Athletics. Jesse Mendes topped the Yankees with two hits, while teammates Nick Soares, Jordan Menard, Jameson Rose and Conor Carmichael all chipped in with run-scoring hits. Soares came out of the bullpen to pitch the final six frames and earn the win.
Tigers 11, Red Sox 7
Myke DeCosta struck out 10 batters in a five-inning pitching stint and along with teammate Matt Michael lined two hits at the plate as the Tigers jumped out to a big lead early, then held on to beat the Red Sox. DeCosta gave way to reliever Alex Benevides, who fanned four batters in two frames. Joe Fingliss topped the Red Sox with two hits, including a three-run home run, and Jason Ramos added a run-scoring single, while Nick Carreira, Andrew Salzillo, Ramos and Fingliss all saw action on the hill.
Angels 10, Yankees 4
The Angels snapped a 3-3 deadlock by scoring three times in the top of the fifth inning and went on to best the Yankees. Winning pitcher Japheth Richards whiffed 12 batters over the first six chapters before giving way to Michael Pettine (who struck out the side) and helped his own cause with a home run. Josh Gervasio stroked three hits for the Angels and knocked in four runs. For the Yankees, Nick Soares drilled two hits and Conor Carmichael and Jameson Rose both added run-scoring hits, while Aaron Wolfang, Jordan Menard, Chris Padula and Jameson Rose shared the pitching chores.
Red Sox 6, Athletics 5
The Red Sox bolted to a 6-0 early lead, then held on to nip the hard-charging Athletics. Winning pitcher Nick Carreira allowed no hits or run during the first four innings and struck out four batters, while teammate Andrew Salzillo drove in three runs with two hits. Colton Furtado clubbed a two-run home for the A’s.
BRONCO DIVISION/NATIONAL LEAGUE
Giants 8, Dodgers 0
Pitchers Cameron Coelho and Dimitri Rosa combined to toss a no-hitter and the Giants erupted for four runs in the fourth inning to post a shutout triumph over the Dodgers. Jacob Raposo and Drew DeCoste excelled defensively for the winners.
Dodgers 6, Marlins 1
The Dodgers cracked the win column for the first time this season when they spanked the Marlins. Jake Hadad pitched a complete-game two-hitter for the Dodgers and struck out 12 batters and paced the victors’ attack along with Denver Weeks, Zack Arruda, Nick Casey and Justin Couture. For the Marlins, Noah Julius fanned 10 batters in five inning of work and Will Rose struck out the side in his only frame of action while Tim Moreira and Julius produced their only hits.
Marlins 6, Dodgers 5
The Marlins broke into the win column for the first time this season by nipping the Dodgers when Zack Stanley singled in the go-ahead run in the bottom of the fifth inning. Noah Julius produced a two-run double for the Marlins, while teammates Tommy DaCosta, Valentino Aiello and Patrick Rafferty all contributed run-scoring hits. Rafferty pitched a complete-game for the Marlins, fanning nine batters, and was helped by outfielder Devon Bradley, who threw out two baserunners. For the Dodgers, Jakob Hadad, Zack Arruda and Denver Weeks all finished with two hits and Weeks and Nathan Pacheco split the pitching chores.
MUSTANG DIVISION
Bees 14, Lookouts 12
The Bees came from behind three times to finally defeat the Lookouts in a back-and-forth clash. Trenton Ferreira clubbed three hits for the Bees and drove in four runs, while teammates Brendan Carvalho, Austin Cooley and Bradley Verville all ended with two hits and Noah Halliwell knocked in a pair of runs. Halliwell also gained credit for the pitching win, with relief help from Cooley. For the Lookouts, Timmy Cabral belted four hits, Connor Alves added three safeties, and Jordan Carvalho, Nicholas Demers, Brett Hajder, Tyler Abdallah, Colby Maderios and Jacob Sarza all concluded with two hits. Maderios and Nicholas Gentili also batted in a couple of scores, while Alves and Cabral shared the pitching duties.
Seadogs 6, Grasshoppers 5
The Seadogs pushed across two runs in the final inning to overhaul the Grasshoppers. Winning pitcher Lucas Sousa notched seven strikeouts in three innings, while teammates Ryan O’Neill and Brandon Bednarik both laced two hits.
Bees 4, Seadogs 2
After being shutout through the opening four frames, the Bees erupted for four runs in the fifth inning to register a vital win over the Seadogs. Brendan Carvalho and Noah Halliwell both collected three hits for the Bees, while Austin Cooley drove in three runs and fanned six batters over the last three innings to claim the victory. For the Seadogs, Shawn Hickey stroked three hits, Dylan Vaglica slammed two hits and pitcher Korey Gendreau struck out three batters in two chapters.
Storm 5, Sand Gnats 4
The Storm rallied to nip the Sand Gnats as Mike Bernardo and Aaron Ramos both collected two hits and Leroy Araujo added a key run-scoring safety. Storm pitchers Araujo, Bernardo and Ramos combined for nine strikeouts.
PINTO DIVISION
Mariners 15, Royals 11
Marcus Moss and Hayden Camara both lashed four hits and Camara executed an unassisted triple play defensively as the Mariners bolted to an early lead and held off the Royals. Paul Bernard contributed three hits to the winners’ cause.
Twins 16, Orioles 13
Noah Napert, Jackson DiPietro, Jordan Shepherd and Aidan Emerson starred as the Twins staved off the Orioles. Dallas Sylvia and Jonathan Pimental both amassed four hits for the Orioles and teammates Brandon Medeiros, Thaire Stansfield and John Jacques all ended with three hits.
Mariners 15, Athletics 8
The Mariners scored in bunches while staving off the Athletics. Marcus Moss cracked four hits for the Mariners, while teammates James Donnelly and Andrew Fallon added three hits apiece.
Athletics 15, Indians 8
The Athletics scored five times in the top of the first inning and were never headed while throttling the Indians. Trevor Arruda smacked five hits for the A’s, while Connor Carey collected four hits for the Indians.
Mariners 19, Indians 8
Madelynne Farmer-Dunlop and J.P. Nasiff both finished with four hits as the Mariners led from start to finish while disposing of the Indians. Luke Sylvester chipped in with three hits for the victors, while Connor Carey cracked four hits for the Indians.
Mariners 14, Royals 13
The undefeated Mariners rallied from an early five-run deficit to nip the Royals, thanks to a walk-off single by Riley Carvalho in the bottom of the sixth inning. Carvalho, Braeden Reis and Sydney Hajder all concluded with three hits for the Mariners, while Hayden Camara and J.P. Nasiff chipped in with run-scoring hits.

SIBL ANNOUNCES GREG GAGNE DIVISION TEAM ROSTERS
SWANSEA – The Greg Gagne Division (13-, 14- and 15-year-old players) of the Swansea Independent Baseball League has announced its team rosters for the 2008 baseball season.
According to Anthony Riccitelli, director of the Greg Gagne Division, its rosters for the coming season are as follows:

SIBL TEAMS OFF TO FLYING STARTS
SWANSEA – Several teams in the Swansea Independent Baseball League are off to quick starts after one full week of regular-season action despite a couple of rainy days.
The Tigers (Bronco Division/American League), Giants (Bronco Division/National League), Padres (Bronco Division/National League), Seadogs (Mustang Division) and Royals (Pinto Division) are among undefeated teams in early-season play.

BRONCO DIVISION/AMERICAN LEAGUE
Tigers 9, Athletics 2
Pitchers Myke DeCosta and Alex Benevides combined for nine strikeouts and teammates Matthew Shaker, Chandler Furtado and Matt Michael all collected two hits as the Tigers tamed the Athletics. Steven Forte and Chris Salvo were standouts in a losing cause.
Angels 9, Red Sox 3
The Angels spotted the Red Sox a two-run lead in the third inning, then roared back to post their second triumph of the season. Japheth Richards clouted a home run and a double among his three hits for the Angels, while winning pitcher Michael Pettine fanned five batters in four innings of work.
Tigers 11, Angels 1
In a confrontation of unbeaten squads, the Tigers scored all their runs in just two innings while overwhelming the Angels. Pitchers Alex Benevides and Myke DeCosta teamed up to strike out seven batters for the Tigers and DeCosta paced their offense with two hits. Matt Michael, Devin Ellinwood and Tony deSimas all contributed run-scoring hits for the victors and Matt Shaker scored twice. Aaron Freitas cracked two hits for the Angels and shared the pitching duties with Michael Pettine.

Padres 8, Dodgers 3
The Padres scored in every inning but one to claim a victory in their season opener against the Dodgers. Drew Raposa, Chris San Martin and Brett Silva all cracked two hits for the winners and teammate C.J. Mulrooney drove in two runs. Pitchers Zack Fingliss and Rapoza notched 14 strikeouts and surrendered just two hits.
Giants 5, Cardinals 4
Evan Waddicor laced a walk-off, run-scoring single to lift the Giants past the Cardinals in a battle of undefeated clubs. The Giants rallied from an early three-run deficit thanks to two hits from Waddicor and run-scoring hits by Marcus Pegurri and Kyle Bouchard, while pitchers Cameron Coelho, Dimitri Rosa and Bouchard collaborated for 10 strikeouts. Nathan Cummings sparked the Cardinals offensively and pitcher Cory Arden tossed three scoreless innings.
MUSTANG DIVISION
Bees 10, Sand Gnats 5
The Bees broke open a tight contest with a four-run outburst in the fourth inning and went on to sting the Sand Gnats. Noah Halliwell topped the winners with three hits, while teammates Brendan Carvalho, Austin Cooley, Trenton Ferreira, Cody Sanford and Bradley Verville all closed with two hits, and Cooley whiffed six batters in three innings of pitching. Jason Couto and Nick Gerling both concluded with three hits for the Sand Gnats, one more than teammates Colby Dunlop, Shawn Gerling and Sean Rafferty (who also drove in a pair of runs), and Couto struck out six batters in two innings of relief pitching.
Lookouts 9, Grasshoppers 5
The Lookouts erased a two-run deficit by scoring four times in the fourth chapter and went on to defeat the Grasshoppers. Nick Demers paced the winners with two hits, while pitchers Colby Maderios and Timmy Cabral teamed up to strike out seven batters. Logan Souza ripped three hits for the Grasshoppers and Matt Shea contributed a couple of safeties.
Seadogs 10, Storm 3
Six players – Lucas Sousa, Dylan Vaglica, Nathan Ladeira, Korey Gendreau, Shawn Hickey and Ryan O’Neill – all recorded two hits to highlight the Seadogs’ impressive triumph over the Storm. Ladeira, Hickey and O’Neill all knocked in two runs for the Seadogs and winning pitcher Nathan Ladeira chalked up three strikeouts. Aaron Ramos pitched a scoreless inning in relief for the Storm.
Storm 9, Bees 8
The Storm roared back from a five-run disadvantage to hand the Bees their first loss of the season. Aaron Ramos clubbed a pair of hits for the Storm and knocked in two runs, while Scott Lebeau contributed a key two-run double and pitchers Michael Bernardo and Leroy Araujo kept their team in the contest. Brendan Carvalho, Austin Cooley, Trenton Ferreira, Noah Halliwell and Cody Sanford all finished with two hits for the Bees and Cooley, Ferreira and Sanford all drove in a pair of runs.
PINTO DIVISION
Twins 20, Orioles 15
The Twins outscored the Orioles in the season debut for both clubs as Jackson DiPietro and Ethan Thaler both shone for the victors. Dallas Sylvia and Jonathan Pimental both rapped four hits for the Orioles, while teammates Brandon Medeiros, Devin Machado, Riley Goncalves and Thaire Stansfield also excelled.
Indians 16, Athletics 9
The Indians produced five runs in the top of the opening chapter and were never headed while throttling the Athletics. Colby Campos, Reed Fortier, Sebastian Botelho and Patrick Kennedy were all credited with four hits for the Indians, while Sean Murphy lined four hits for the A’s.
Orioles 13, Blue Jays 13
The Orioles and Blue Jays battled to a draw when Danny Brodeur, Devin Machado, Thaire Stansfield and Brandon Medeiros all recorded four hits for the Orioles and Alex Millar and Michael Martins matched that output for the Blue Jays. Gabrielle Halliwell and John Jacques starred defensively for the Orioles as did William Simons and Jack Benfeito for the Blue Jays.
Royals 15, Indians 14
The Royals rallied to score four runs in the final frame and nipped the Indians. Cameron Henderson, Colby Campos and Reed Fortier all finished with four hits for the Indians.

SIBL TEAMS FARE WELL IN AAU PLAY
SWANSEA – Teams representing the Swansea Independent Baseball League are meeting with success during early-season play in the New England District of AAU Baseball.
The SIBL’s 13-and-Under Division club won three of its first four regular-season starts, bouncing back from an 18-4 thrashing at the hands of the Rhode Island Reds to beat the Reds, 8-3, then sweeping a doubleheader from the Cape Cod Eagles by scores of 8-3 and 17-7.
The SIBL’s 12-and-Under entry dropped a twinbill to the North Attleboro Hawks by margins of 7-3 and 17-13, but split a doubleheader opposite the South Coast Shamrocks Blue, losing the opener, 11-1, before rallying the cop the nightcap, 6-4.
Meanwhile, the SIBL’s 10-and-Under National outfit has posted a 3-3 record in early-season action.
12-and-Under
In its 7-3 loss to North Attleboro, Swansea was sparked by Japheth Richards, who collected three hits at the plate and limited the Hawks to two runs in four innings of pitching while striking out seven. In the second contest, North Attleboro erupted for 11 runs in the second frame, then withstood a late SIBL rally to clinch the sweep, despite two-hit performances from Richards, Alex Benevides and Michael Pettine.
Colton Furtado drove in three runs in a losing cause.
After dropping the opener versus the Shamrocks, Swansea erased an early 3-1 deficit to claim a split. Benevides and Aaron Freitas both produced key run-scoring hits for the winners and rightfielder Nick Carreira threw out a runner at the plate trying to score to end the game.
13-and-Under
In its opener against the Reds, Swansea trailed by just a 7-4 margin when it surrendered 11 runs in the fifth inning. Tyler Drainville recorded two hits in a losing cause.
The SIBL squad then rebounded to best the Reds by an 8-3 margin as Zack Mitsmenn and Mike St. John both rapped two hits and St. John notched the win on the mound, with relief help from C.J. Maderios.
Jordan Thivierge was the winning pitcher with bullpen assistance from Dave Mitchell and Maderios as Swansea stung the Eagles, 8-3. Mitchell sparked the victors’ attack with three hits, while Maderios and Dan Pedro contributed two hits apiece.
The SIBL outfit then overcame an early four-run deficit to whip the Eagles, 17-7, thanks to two-hit outputs from Maderios, Drainville and Mitchell. Pedro was the winning pitcher.
